Dealing with Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is a common disorder found in the large intestine. As a result of this disease, pouches form about the colon, pouches in which certain types of food particles and bacteria can become lodged causing very serious and on some occasions life threatening problems. Indeed, if a person continually consumes food that is contraindicated for a person with diverticulitis, that individual can end up suffering extremely serious health problems, including:

Bowel obstruction

Abscess

Peritonitis

Fistula

Strictures

Bleeding

Once again, and as has been noted previously, there are instances when diverticulitis becomes so serious it threatens the life of a patient. Even in cases that are not life threatening, diverticulitis can cause a patient extreme pain and, again, the major complications noted a moment ago. This simply is not a condition that anyone should take lightly.

Physicians all over the world have one consistent recommendation when it comes to an individual who is afflicted with the disease of diverticulitis: Such an individual must - must - watch very close what they eat. The bottom line is that there are some food products that seriously aggravate the disease of diverticulitis and cannot be consumed by a patient with this ailment. Towards the top of any physician's list of food that must be avoided if you are suffering from diverticulitis is popcorn.

Physicians warn their patients with diverticulitis against eating popcorn for two primary reasons. First, the kernels associated with popcorn can get stuck in the pouched that exist about the colon in the case of this disease. Likewise, the hulls from popcorn can become similarly lodged.

When popcorn kernels and hulls become lodged in this manner, bacteria growth increases significantly and other types of disorders associated with the colon start to become apparent. Ultimately, a patient can be left suffering from one or several of the conditions previously mentioned in this article all because he or she ate a handful of popcorn. While it may sound very dramatic, the fact is that people have died from the effects of diverticulitis after eating food items including popcorn.

Many people have heard that fiber and what sometimes is called roughage is beneficial to your digestive system, including your colon. The theory is that fiber and roughage helps to clean out waste that gets trapped in the colon. The argument goes on to conclude that popcorn actually is a good source for fiber and roughage. In the end, this really would be accurate if popcorn did not come standard with kernels and hulls.

Fortunately, there is now popcorn available to a somewhat limited (but growing) degree on the market today that comes complete without any kernels and without any hulls. In other words, even a person with diverticulitis can obtain all of the wholesome benefits of popcorn without any of the risks and negative consequences. More and more often, people concerned about their health, are turning to popcorn that is devoid of both kernels and hulls for their snack time enjoyment.
