Popcorn and braces

Naturally, no one likes the experience of wearing braces. However, most people who do end up wearing braces - children and adults alike - have at least some appreciation that wearing braces correctly for the recommended period of time will result in a significantly improved smile. They key to getting the smile you dreamed off after wearing braces is to follow all of the guidelines that are established in regard to the proper wearing and maintenance of your braces.

When it comes to wearing braces for an improved smile and appearance, you must keep in mind that there are certain foods that you should not eat. One of the food items that you must avoid when you are wearing braces is traditional popcorn.

Of course, for many people popcorn is a popular snack. And, through the years, many a person has sung the praises of popcorn. But, with that noted, if you want a better smile and appearance, and if you are wearing braces to reach that goal, you must avoid popcorn all together.

The primary reason that popcorn is dangerous to a person wearing braces rests in the kernels and the hulls that are associated with popcorn and popcorn products. Of course, if the kernels and hulls could be removed (a point which will be discussed later in this article) a person wearing braces actually would be able to enjoy popcorn.

When it comes to braces and popcorn, kernels and hulls can cause immediate and extensive damage to these dental appliances. Naturally, when popcorn kernels or hulls do cause this type of obvious damage, a person can get it rectified with a visit to the orthodontist in short speed. However, such a visit to the orthodontist will end up costing you an unnecessary amount of money. Moreover, in many instances such as this when popcorn kernels or hulls cause obvious and major damage to a braces, the incident will also cause injury to your mouth. In many instances the injuries that arise out of this type of situation end up being major. Even after the initial injury is treated, serious infection oftentimes occurs further aggravating the problem.

What many people do not realize is that popcorn (specifically popcorn kernels and hulls) can cause less obvious damage to a person's braces. Indeed, there are many instances in which popcorn has caused subtle and yet serious damage to a person's braces that the patient with these dental appliances had no knowledge of whatsoever. Once damaged, the braces simply do not function correctly and can end up causing extremely serious and absolutely permanent damage to a patient's teeth and jaw.

There is only one instances in which popcorn and braces should be allowed to mix. There are now some great tasting and safe popcorn products on the market today that do not contain either popcorn kernels or hulls. This type of popcorn is the only variation of this snack that a person with braces should ever consider eating.
